Sangria

Sangría is a wine punch, but is more formally an aromatized wine. Sangria which originated in Spain is usually comprised of:

  • red wine,
  • chopped or sliced fruit,
  • a sweetener such as sugar,
  • a small amount of added brandy, triple sec, or other spirits.

The ingredients in sangría vary; these variations are generally based on the type of fruit used, the type of spirits added if any, and the presence or lack of carbonation. When white wine is used to make the drink, the result is called sangría blanco.

It is important to allow time for the fruit flavors to blend with the rest of the ingredients if a successful sangria is expected. For this very reason, preparation consists of thinly slicing the fruit or cutting it in cubes and then mixing all ingredients – the addition of ice and any carbonated sodas are reserved ‘til later. After some hours of refrigeration, the ice and any remaining ingredients are added and the drinks are poured. Also crucial to a good sangría is a good wine as a base, since in most recipes for sangria the wine remains the dominant ingredients.
